Time Management Magic: How the Two Minutes Rule Can Transform Your Life

Two minutes rule explanation

This rule is coming from the well-known book called "Atomic Habits", by James Clear.

It's a simple strategy, with a huge power if properly followed.

The two minutes rule states:

"When you start a new habit, it should take less than two minutes to do."

You'll find that almost all your habits can be scaled down into a two-minute version.

Let's go with some examples!

How to apply the rule

The idea behind this approach is to make your new habits as easy as possible to start, so you'll succeed with them.

Let's take some examples of how to apply this rule:

  • "Run 4km" would become "Tie my shoes and warm up".
  • "Go to the gym" would become "Prepare my gym bag".
  • "Read each day" would become "Read one page each day".

You'll realize that once you've started doing the right thing, is much easier to keep moving.

So, now you could say: Come on! Reading one page is ridiculous!

A habit must be established before it can be improved. If you can't achieve the basics, you'll fail to reach your end goal.

The dopamine effect also takes a key role in this rule. You achieve your two-minute goal, so you feel satisfied and want to keep moving. The more you repeat this process, the higher the possibility of implementing your new habit.

The gateway habits

The gateway habits are the habits you need to follow to reach your desired goal.

Let me share an example: You want to run a marathon.

  • Running 10K is hard, but easier than a marathon.
  • Walking five thousand steps is easier.
  • Walking for ten minutes is much easier.
  • Putting on your shoes is very easy.

Your end goal is to run a marathon, but your gateway habit is to put on your shoes.

Conclusions

The two minutes rule is a productivity hack to facilitate the introduction of a new habit in your routine.
